Dissecting the International Response to the Palestine Issue
Despite the gravity of the situation in Palestine, the reaction of the international community has been minimal, with the global leaders barely doing the bare minimum to keep the conflict under check. With the Middle-Eastern countries criticizing the Israeli attacks, the still greener friendship between the nations appears to be under threat amid the rising uncertainties. Half a globe apart, the U.S. is responding against the current government’s agenda of minimal involvement in the Israel-Palestine issue by puppeteering the Security Council. With little support from the U.S., the European Union’s actions are unlikely to bring any material relief to the distressed state. In the second part of the series, the authors have attempted to explicate the international response to the Palestine conflict by the global leaders in the backdrop of surrounding political and diplomatic agendas
Reaction Of The Middle Eastern Countries
The massacre in their neighbouring nation received little heed from the Middle East. While most Arab countries have maintained an eerie silence on the growing tensions in Palestine, the Arab League issued an ineffectual statement which condemned the brutal airstrikes by Israel on Gaza, and termed them “indiscriminate and irresponsible”. Egypt, on the other hand called out Israel for its condemnable actions in Jerusalem, and its attempts to pacify the aggravated situation, nonetheless a praiseworthy gesture, was met with functional ignorance from the disturbed nation. Jordan and Turkey expressed similar views and displayed abhorrence towards the ongoing feud against Israel’s brutal retaliation and voiced their support for the Palestinians living in East Jerusalem. Nevertheless, the minimal reactions of the neighbours and their tacit support for Palestine is a result of fresh wounds inflicted upon them as a result of their conflicts with Israel, which commands a dominant military presence in the region.
Even those nations which have mended their relation with Israel have expressed their concern on the atrocious acts of Israel which is brutally crushing the Jerusalem residents who are also being rendered homeless due to mass evictions. The UAE, which has friendly relations with the state has also condemned the lack of religious tolerance showcased by the Israel authorities, with Abu Dhabi and Bahrain especially expressing concerns over the attack on mosques particularly in the holy month of Ramdan. Both the states have urged Israel to end the continued attack on people of Jerusalem, and to come to a peaceful solution to de-escalate the tensions, which has caused irreversible damage to life and property to the bereaved community. Nations like UAE which had ended its feud with Israel only very recently may once again turn hostile, and buried tensions may resurface again, which can result in catastrophic results in the region.
The Deafening Silence of Leading Nations- Strategy Over Sympathy?
The world leaders have maintained a deafening silence on the conflagration in the middle- east. Nations like the United States, which is an ally of Israel has, much to the dismay, has made a hollow, half-hearted offer of help, provided that both the sides call for a ceasefire. The bigotry in the actions of U.S is eminent from its attempts to overpower the Security Council and force it to stay mum on the entire issue. U.S has justified this predicament by stating that intervention of the Security Council might worsen the situation, adding to the complexities of the present circumstance. The silence of the United Nations on this issue is likely to set a precedent which will have serious repercussions in the coming times. States like China might use this instance in their favour to get a leverage against Tunisia and Norway. Russia too, may gain from this situation, by using this non-intervention policy against U.S when it brings the Syria issue on the table.
The EU has issued a statement, calling for a ceasefire and suggesting that peace be restored in Israel. It recognised the right of the Israeli people to protect their natives, but at the same time emphasised on letting the freedom of religion prevail in Jerusalem. Some members of the EU have denounced the attacks by Hamas, but they have maintained an undignified silence on the actions of Israel. Others have called for a political solution, although no strong stance has been taken regarding the same. This reaction of the leading group of nations has raised eyebrows as regards its role in pacifying the entire situation. However, it is feared that actions of EU will make only a little difference in this situation, even if they were to take a firm stance against the violence. Until the U.S, which is the back supporter of Israel withdraws the hindrances it has posed before the UN, restoring peace by international intervention is likely to be a failure. Under such dire circumstances which have resulted in the massacre of thousands, the international community should rise above personal and political gains and focus on restoring normalcy in the disturbed region.
